commets on a mock up

This is a questionnaire I came up with once I had made this mock up. I thought I would get some feed back to see if any of my ideas would be useful for my final product.

Here are the responses that I got to the questions:

What do you think to the layout of the magazine? (Is it easy to read?)

  • looks pretty easy to read and I like the stripey background at the top

  • its not to crowded

  • good because it looks like a music magazine because of the music related items in the picture

  • yes it is east to read

  • I think that it is very affective as the stories don't hinder the main picture

  • The plain background of the image makes the text easy to read
  • its simple and I tend to prefer more busy layouts but I like this one because it's easy to read & doesn't have too much going on

What do you think of the colour scheme that I have used?

  • looks good. I like how it matches the colours of the cover photo

  • really good because its bright but subtle

  • the colour scheme works very well as you have mixed together simple vibrant colours which makes the magazine interesting but not over powering
  • i think a few colours is a good idea as long as there's not too many

Is there anything else that you would like to add? (Good/bad points)

  • The white lines look a bit strange around the titles, but other than that it is really good

  • more information is needed about what is inside

  • good points: each person in picture is adding a element of music and fashion & it isn't too cluttered

  • bad points: no issue number or date. That's it.
  • I like the very top line claiming it's the UK's best selling mag as sometimes a reputation can make you buy a magazine

I used a website to get some ideas for my magazines name. I then asked people in my class which they thought were the most appropriate.
These were the results:
1. got 1 vote
2. got 2 votes
3. got 1 vote
4. got 1 vote
5. got 1 vote
6. got 2 votes
7. got 8 votes
8. got 3 votes
9. got 2 votes
After collecting this information I have decided to go with the majority vote and have chosen to use font 7. I also think that this will go well with the rest of the ideas I have for my magazine cover.

This is a mock up that I have come up with. I wanted to try some ideas and test them out. I altered the colour schemes and fonts before I got to this.

  • Phunkkk - 8
  • Bounce - 3
  • Quake - 1
  • BOOM - 2

from my results I have decided to go with the majority and call my magazine Phunkkk.

Preliminary Product - Front Cover.

This the front cover to my preliminary project.

I have used fairly plain bold type phase for my masthead as it is a school magazine and I thought it would be conventional to use it. It is graduated blue colour as that what fits into my colour scheme of yellow, black and blue. Against the black background it really stands out as so gets the audience's attention.

I have used a fairly simple font so that it is clear and obvious.

The main image is to go with the main story and I surrounded the image I made with a yellow border to make it stand out and to tie in with the colour scheme.

The mast head follows the colour scheme and i altered the colours to make it more attractive. Incorporated the school logos to make it clear that it is a school magazine.

My Contents Page

This is my contents page for the school magazine, which I am doing as my preliminary project.
I gave it the bold and obvious masthead of Contents which I placed in the convenctional place (at the top). It follows the colour scheme that I have which is blue, yellow and black. I chose this color scheme as it relates to the school colours and also becuase these are quite sophisticated which I find suitable for the audience I am writing for (13-18).
I used yellow bold typephase for the subheadings as they clearly stand out. The smaller text underneath each article gives a small amount of information that lets the reader know what the story is about without giving out too much information.
I used the images so that the audience could see what I was talking about as well as just reading about it. This makes it more interesting for them and breaks the text up a bit.
I put the images on at an angle so that it made them stand out slightly and makes the page more "fun" as it has been created for a teenage age group.
I wrote the page numbers over the top of the image so that the reader can instantly find out what page the story they want to read about is on.

Magazine double Page Spread

This example isn't that of a music magazine but it can help me to learn and observe key ways to present my own work.
This double page spread is clearly for the audience of women due to the colour scheme and the image used.
The mast head "angel" is clear and obvious and will catch the audiences attention.
The colour scheme is tied in with the image as the dress the model wears is the same colour as the type phase.
The article involved seems to be very spacious and so may lead the audience to believe that it is an extra interesting story or that it is significant to the magazine and maybe featured on the cover.

Bike Magazine Double Page Spread

This is a motorbike magazine which although isn't what I am basing my magazine on, can be used to help me understand the layouts of magazines on a double page spread.
The images on this spread are big and relate to the story to show what they are talking about to the audience. I think that because there is a lot of text the pictures help to break it up so that the reading doesn't become too tedious.
The mast head "8 HOUR ENDURANCE" instantly appeals to the audience and suggests excitement.
Also the subheading "Young Blood!" makes it seem even more important to read, especially with the use if the exclamation mark. This adds a sense of urgency.

Wedding Magazine Contents Pages

Even though this magazine is a different genre to the one I am doing i can still get ideas from the way it's laid out.
The mast head clearly shows that it's the contents page as it's put at the top of the page. The type phase of the mast head is convectional for a wedding magazine so that's why it's being used to effect.
The images once again relate to the stories and articles in the magazine and they have the page numbers incorporated into them. This makes it easier for the audience to find what they are looking for.
The colours used are simple but effect as the classic black and white colours have been used with a hint of pink which is used for the page numbers. Using this makes the page numbers more obvious and easier to read for the audience.

Music Magazine Contents Page

This is a contents page for a music magazine which is made obvious to the audience due to the images of the bands which are shown around the different articles that are listed on the page. Also the images are related back to the articles as they have the page number that they appear on added onto them to make it quicker for the reader to process information.
The main article name is in bold pink writing to make them stand out for the audience to be more allured to them.
The mast head of "KINGSIZE" suggests to the audience that this magazine is better than normal and so may further interest the reader due to their curiosity.

Contents Page

This magazine is a home styling magazine. This shown by the images used, which include a lounge and a fireplace.
It clearly states that it is a contents page by having it as the masthead of the page.
It clearly shows the stories and articles which are in the magazine which appeal to the audience to do with home styles and DIY.
It has clear images of some of the involved stories which relate back to the headings at the side as they have the page numbers added onto them as do the stories lines.
It has subheadings for the different things the audience maybe looking for such as "Tips and Tricks" or "Cover Story" which makes the page a lot quicker and easier for the reader to process.

NME Cover

Masthead: is in the top corner which is conventional to this particular magazine. Its uses the contrasting colours of red and white which makes it stand out from the black background.

The subheading is in complete contrast to the rest of the magazine as its in light blue. This would catch the audiences eye instantly and let them know that the Verve are featured in this magazine.

Images: the Verve are covering the majority of page suggesting that they are important, meaning that they must be read about.

Rolling Stones Cover

The mast head is once again obscured by the cover person (Amy Winehouse) suggesting that the magazine is already known for its conventionality. It is also quite amusing as the cover person is known for her outrageously big hair, so on this cover she does cover nearly the whole name of the magazine.
The name of the magazine relates to the subheading as they are both light blue this suggests that this is the main story. Also the fact that she is the cover girl proves this.
The image is in contrast with background and the text as the background is white any Amy is wearing black making her stand out which is famously known for.

Kerrang Cover

The mast head Kerrang is being obscured by the band on the front suggesting that this magazines reputation is already so great that it doesn’t need to show all of its title.
The bold use of colour in the subheading makes the story stand out and makes the audience realise what it will be about without making to much effort.
The picture suggests that this band are slightly mad which may help the reader to realise what kind of band they are, this is confirmed by the small print under the subheading which says “the world’s most dangerous band”.

FADER Magazine cover analysis

This R n B magazine is different to the others but it suits it audience just like the rest.
The big bold mast head is clearly show n at the top of the magazine to make it known.
The main picture is very colourful and bold which makes it immediately catch eyes. It shows the singer Keri Hilson dressed in a “ghetto” fashion which relates her back to the audience and to the type of music artist she is.
The Subheading “the NOW issue” makes the audience more interested as they will want to know what is different in this issue.
